Rhodes - a Pleasant Surprise!

Last Sunday, our ship docked in Rhodes and, as it turned out, it was a gorgeous sunny day.  A British couple I'd connected with and I decided just to have a wander around the town.  It was the perfect decision.  First, because it meant we could have a lazy morning rather than get up early to get on some coach trip.  Second, because it turned out to be such a charming place with a lovely seafront, a fortress, pretty buildings and streets, and lovely shops.

Rhodes, the largest of Greece’s Dodecanese islands, is known for its beach resorts, ancient ruins and remnants of its occupation by the Knights of St. John during the Crusades. The city of Rhodes has an Old Town featuring the medieval Street of the Knights and the castle-like Palace of the Grand Masters. Captured by the Ottomans and then held by the Italians, the palace is now a history museum.

So, we set off about 10:30 and it was a short walk along the water to get to one of the old town's main gates.  Once inside, we spent time discovering the very pretty streets and perusing the interesting shops.

After a while, we went to a charming family-run restaurant for a light lunch.  The tasty pita bread was made from the grandfather's recipe.  I had spanakopita and Fidelma and I shared a 1/2 litre of rose wine.  It was fun sitting there, chatting and people watching.

We then wandered around a bit more before heading back to the ship.

The next day was an "at sea" day so it was nice to relax on board and take it easy.
